  • nothing’s fair in this day and age.
i don’t find addiction to be such a bad thing either.

i’d say i’m pretty much addicted to coffee, but all that does is make me enjoy it even more.
..so starbucks makes an extra £1.55 pounds everytime i’m in town.

Addiction is such a  harsh word.
    haha.

  • Fair… yes I suppose it is fair. It’s not a store’s job to distinguish between a patron buying a bottle of wine for a casual drink for instance and an alcoholic. The online gaming sites will not be shutting down anytime soon because they are enabling those with gambling addictions. You create a demand and they will supply. The only person responsible for not contributing to the profits of a company that uses dependency as a means of securing loyalties is yourself.

  • I agree with steph.  Also, you need to specify the kind of addiction…I’m addicted to Buffy and it’s totally fair that Joss Whedon gets money out of my addiction!  On the other hand, I realize you’re implying the drug/alchohol addiction and I have to say it shouldn’t be fair for someone’s pain to support others but…the world has to go around somehow and unfortunately evil things are a way to make that happen.

  • I dont know..

  • woah…i can’t believe you guys are still up.

honestly……you’d think it’d be apparent to what loathsome creatures you are filling this who blog community with your insane propaganda.

don’t you think it’s a bit late for you to be cherring this here?

where the hell where you when those billions had died, huh?

why is it just okay doing this NOW….when all those people have died.

maybe it was just the impact of those people dying…but you can’t just pop up now going, “oooh, smoking is baadd….we’re on your side! we’re trying to get those mean nasty corporate business suits outta heree…….ooohhh”

    go away.
you’re ruining xanga as it is.

  • not the stores fault if your dumb enough to let yourself become addicting to something that will kill you exhibiting stupidity is somewhat unfair yes but allowing yourself to be stupid and make bad decisions is wat makes the whole thing fair in itself basically if you are such a moron that you intentionaly damage your body then yes is completely fair for a business to take advantage of you you deserve it

  • It’s completely fair.

  • That’s what rehab does. Hahaha. They let you spend thousands of dollars to get off crack so they can pad their pockets and feel good because they’re “helping” society, when a lot of people don’t want help.

  • I don’t know. Do you believe in the legalization of drugs and marijuana. Do you drink alcohol? If you said yes to either one of those questions than you obviously believe that it is ok to make a profit off of someone elses addictions.

  • no, a person chooses an addiction, its just that the gateways to addiction are commercialized and are everywhere which put people into that situation

  • every business seeks to create an addiction or a dependance, Mc Donalds uses some of the most addictive substances, sugar caffein, fat, carbs. And where would you be without this computer? Its called demand and businesses will seek to establish it by any means. So the question shouldn’t be is it fair to use an addiction to make a profit the question should be, is it fair to use a potentially lethal addiction to turn a profit?

but hey if you want to start asking that question maybe you should start a web site called the Truth about Fast foodor the Truth about Alcohol, I don’t even need to expand on that topior the truth about Fluorescent light bulbs, they contain enough mercury to kill most people over time, not to mention the light is harsh on the eyes, and soon it will be mandatory to buy them because the US government is phasing out tungsten light bulbs

  • P.S.

cigaret = Darwin’s theories at workhow else will we strengthen our species unlike guns that know not the strength of who they kill, cigs weed out the vulnerable, they are in essence the wolf that picks of the sickif only there were a cig that targeted the bottom 200 of the 400 students at my school…

  • First, the definition: Addiction: where your body is so adapted to a substance that it literally craves and thinks that it needs the substance to the point that if there is no supply of that substance, the body begins to have an extremely negative reaction.

    Second, who’s responsible: Everyone.
    - The tobacco companies who know the effects of nicotine and rest of the cigarette are nothing but destructive to the human body. The relaxing qualities that it produces is only a result of a temporary fix which seem to also have been exploited by the tobacco compies, trading a person’s actual well-being for an illusion which, like all illusions, only last for a while.
    - The stores that choose to supply the product. Forget supply and demand. There are so many products out there that if they simply did their marketing strategy right, they can remove all tobacco products and find something to replace it and still make a profit. The knowledge of the harmful effects of cigarettes is no mystery to all but the most honestly ignorant of people (usually kids or those who simply haven’t been exposed to that part of reality). When someone starts a company and chooses to supply tobacco, they are only aiding the problem. No one forced them to supply the product.
    - The smokers who chose to pick up the cigarette. Now I know that statistics say that a kid who grows up in an environment of smoking is more likely to smoke, but they still have a choice, too. They know that they can’t breathe as well around smoke so they know something isn’t quite right about it. Peer pressure might also be a factor and is unfortunate and understandable (not every child is as strong in their belief in themself as we would hope and pray) but it’s still a choice. At the very least, for those who are older – teens and up – the choice to start smoking is less and less excusable/understandable. There comes a time when personal integrity and acception of one’s choices is all there is to consider. It’s no mystery, cigarettes have no benefit and do lead to death, ultimately.

In short, from the growth and distribution (with the INTENT to make it into cigarette) of the tobacco plant to the manufacture of cigarettes to the choice to sell the product in the store to the choice to buy and smoke them… no one in the stream is guiltless. Everyone is responsible.

So to answer the main question, “Is it fair to use an addiction to make a profit?” No. Because reguardless of what the buyer’s choices might be (to buy, or not to buy) it is wrong to even provide something that destroys, pure and simple.
Some other bloggers mentioned alcohal as an example. The difference is that in small amounts – meaning far short of getting drunk – alcohal can even be beneficial to the body. Not so with cigarettes.

I think, maybe, the best way to answer this question is that it is not fair to give someone the options between their health or death. A person is always responsible for the choices they make, but we are resonsible for the options we provide.
If you hit someone for no reason, that person would be wise not to hit you back as it would only propagate more needless pain. But you are still responsible for hitting them in the first place.
If you talk behind their back just to gossip, they have a choice as to whether to cuss you out or forgive you. You still chose gossip. You are responsible.
If you shoot someone, the family and friends have a choice whether to take matters into their hands and hunt you down or let the law handle the matter. You committed murder.

The potential smoker/buyer always has a choice as to whether or not they will pick up the cigarette and start smoking. The tobacco company is the one that provided the product in the first place. Period.
(And don’t give me, “Well they’ll just find something else to get addicted to.” Don’t give me that lame, idiodic cop-out.)

  • You know, I’m sick of all these people saying that smoking has no benefits. Sure, it’s not chemically suitable for one’s body, but the mind is another thing. Did you know that those who smoke while reading retain what they have read better then if they had not smoked? It’s the truth. There are other such truths about the mental aspects of smoking. As far as people saying alcohol is healthy in small doses, well it still affects the liver, no matter how little you drink. Hell, taking motrin, even if it’s only once every month, will harm your body.

My point is, everything we do in life can harm us in some fashion. There is not a single thing we do that is safe, it all holds some risk to our health or life. Humans are driven by living on the edge, it’s just that one persons edge is another persons stupidity. It’s all a matter of opinion. As well, why do people do things that are exciting? It’s the fact of eluding death that gives us a high.

  • yeah it’s fair… we sell clothing to shopping addicts, coffee to coffee addicts, food to obese people who can’t stop eating.

No matter what industry you’re in, you’re almost always screwing someone over to make a profit.  So yeah.  It’s fair.  Maybe it’s not right, but it’s fair.

  • Yes, it’s as fair as your own decision to make your choices.

  • i dont think its fair… it sounds like using somebodys weakness for ur own advantage
