I don’t know. Why doesn’t the mega ton of toxins in car and plane
engines make the evening news each and every evening? Or why doesn’t someone start a campaign
to feed hungry people with as much organized energy as anti smoking or anti abortion advocates and
eliminate poverty through government legislation? Where are all the
statistics on children born say between 1930 and 1970 who died from
second hand smoke by the time they were 30 or 40 due to their parent’s
smoking, but never smoked themselves? The incidence in canine lung
cancer is increasing without any known cause. What could it be caused from? Statistically, children
who live near congested car and plane traffic contract asthma. Should we legislate that family with children not be allowed to live near interstates or airfields? How many people, men,
women and children die in wars somewhere in the world right now? How many
children die of leukemia who live near power lines? How come Bush & Co. can corrupt the constitution AND the government at large and no one does anything about it?
How come? in an endless list of things that the news can report? Why do people care what other people do? Why can’t Johnny read?
I don’t smoke, but this issue is becoming as stale as the ashtrays it pro ports to eliminate. Of course cigarettes are unhealthy, but so are fast food cheeseburgers and Lays potato chips and working in a coal mine. What you are advocating is a romper room society where no one ever grows up and teacher always knows best. No wonder this country is drowning in the mire of absurdity.
I’m curious what this organization’s response is to the increasingly cynical, disillusioned, and just plain irritated opinions regarding their campaign.
In addition, the shade of orange they use on this page alone is enough to put me in a foul mood, so I’d like them to justify that as well if they could.
Well the news stinks thats why. They rather report about exciting things like celebrities or horrible deaths and stuff. But big news like deaths of thousands of smokers a day just isn’t big enough for them to report about I guess. Media sucks about as much as smoking does!!!

How many people die of obesity after wharfing down the Burger King’s that you peddle, CPB ???
YOU DON’T GIVE A FUCK. So kindly don’t insult our intelligence by claiming you do about smokers.
because it’s all about money.
incidently, this site is funded by the tobacco company. any advertising is good advertising, right? which is probably why you’re wondering why you can’t get yourself on the news in a form other than a class-action lawsuit.
cool site!
How much did the Truth company pay Xanga to feature this question, and more importantly, is this whole “truth” campaign working?
“Truth” implies that there is a lie or misconception somewhere. I guess in the past, tobacco companies have lied in ads or glamourized smoking, however, I haven’t seen a tobacco commercial in at least ten years, and I hardly ever see tabacco ads in magazines. When I do see ads, there is generally some beautiful woman sitting on a camel dressed as a harem girl (for Camels) or something similar. I have a hard time pulling out a “lie” out of the magazine page, to be honest.
So I wonder what “truth” is really coming to light by saying that cigarettes are bad for you. Cause it says that right on the package.
Who are you Truth people? I tried to find out in your “About Us” section of your website, but I couldnt find who you are. I cant find a “president” of Truth, or who funds Truth, or who created Truth. It’s hard to trust these “Facts” (about 1,200 people dying a day from a tobacco related death) when you cant consider the source. I’m sure “Adults” may not “understand” the whole Truth campaign, but I’m 19 years old and I’m even asking questions so there must be something seriously wrong with what you are doing.
As far as the ad campaigns go (though I wonder how you guys are funded. Through the government? If not through the government, who is funding you and why?) the whole “Fantasy Land” idea really blows, no offense. When I watch the commercials, I’m annoyed and not amused. Even the first time I saw it, I was disappointed. You guys might want to get tips from the anti-drug campaigns. One of the commercials was a teenage boy building a weed cocoon, and then the boy popping out of the cocoon at age 30, still in the same clothes, living in the same house. That was a deep commercial. Instead of these ridiculously colorful and animated commercials, why dont you try to do something thoughtful? Just because we’re “kids” does not mean that we cant think. If you are marketing to an even younger audience than the teens, then your commercials are having the opposite affect. It’s as if the writers said, “Now, what do kids love? Well, cartoons, colors, and singing! Lets do all those things!” It’s not effective because putting something negative along all of those “positive” things and using sarcasm may be too difficult a concept to grasp for the 8-12 age group.
What are you really trying to do?
um……alot of stuff doesn’t make the news…because it’s the “norm” now for those things, such as people dying from cigarrettes. It’s not a big deal anymore. They do it to themselves so, who cares.
truth campaign is working. my sister and i used it to make our mom stop smoking when we were 4 and 5.
Do you know why it doesn’t make the news? It’s a crime, yes. What makes it a crime is the fact that it’s a product that is sold to the public, that can eventually kill them. [They get around it by warning the smokers.]
Why is it not publicly recognized, at least not through the media?
1. Because why would the media continuously cover a topic that the general public doesn’t ‘care’ about? - Smokers don’t want to hear about how they are choosing to kill themselves, and harm the people around them. That’s too ugly. [They also don't want to think about the fact that they're addicted to it, and it's not easy to overcome.] And besides, the media isn’t that liberal; it’s not allowed to be.
2. Because it’s a victimless crime by definition. The fact that they are warned that it may kill them, or cause cancer, gives them no excuse to say they didn’t know. - Just like gambling, just like prostitution, just like any other activity that you CHOOSE to engage in, knowing the possible risks. When they either consciously, or unconsciously weigh the pros and cons of the activity, the pros outweigh the possible risks.
*This is just my opinion, I’m not saying that my reason is the only right one. I’m just saying that this is my belief.
American soldiers kill hundreds of people per day in Iraq and Afghanistan. Why is it not mentioned on the news? Seriously, I hope you all die horrible, awful, malingering deaths from cigarette smoke. Surely there can be no more fit a fate for a propaganda machine than this.
Society, as well as the media, have become conditioned to seeing this daily. I’m glad that many more people are becoming aware of it, but the fact that not enough are just doesn’t cut it.
This isn’t relevant, but my friend started smoking. How do I change her mind? Please help
Truth sucks, seriously.
Corporate responsibility begins when corporations start breaking the law.
Personal responsibility never ends. No one puts a gun to anyone’s head and tells them to smoke.
Until we make tobacco illegal (even less likely to happen than pot being legalized, ironically enough) these corporations are simply doing what other businesses have done for centuries- created a more viable, marketable product with a focus on the bottom line. Aquire new customers, keep existing customers.
If they target children in advertizing (hard to prove) or put in illegal additives (lack of motive) then put the CEO’s balls under a meat tenderizer and go to town, but until then, telling people what they already know isn’t going to solve the problem.
Now, once space exploration really ramps up, we’ll solve the smoking thing. It won’t take too many explosions in a pure oxygen environment to get people to quit. Besides, everyone knows you can’t grow tobacco on the moon.
For the same reason why aborting 30 million (and counting) babies hasn’t made the evening news: Because it’s a legal choice that people can make, whether it’s good for them (and others) or not. DUH!
Also, it’d be way too much work for a reporter to go around the country (or world, for that matter) and interview the families of every single dead smoker for a 30 to 60-second segment. The same would apply to every family of a dead soldier on either side of a war (using the social science definition of war, anyways).
Well the news stinks thats why. They rather report about exciting things like celebrities or horrible deaths and stuff. But big news like deaths of thousands of smokers a day just isn’t big enough for them to report about I guess. Media sucks about as much as smoking does!!!
So, the media stink because they don’t report on stuff that you want them to? I’d hate to break it to you, but the media is much like any other business: They cater to the largest audience possible for the most profit possible.
Second, your definition of “news” leaves something to be desired. It’s far too arbitrary. To me, the fact that I recently got a better job is newsworthy, but it wouldn’t (nor should it) be to any national news channel, newspaper, radio broadcast, or any other outlet. Prolonged trends take months to report on effectively, which is why reports of dead smokers and aborted fetuses/babies aren’t going to appear on a news broadcast.
Finally, your definition of “media” is also amusing me when you’ve actually utilized a form of it to complain about how much you think it sucks.
Because its a profitable business thats why! You sell cigarettes thats money. People get sick they need to see a doctor thats more money, people see people getting sick they want to quit that’ll cost even more money. It doesn’t even matter if people die … as long as someone makes money off of it!
if they wanna die a hell lot earlier, i dont think we should give a damn abt them.
I’m confused about a couple things. First of all, where are these numbers coming from because I can’t find out since Truth has gotten rid of any sort of scientific documentation and government approval for their research claims. Several studies used by Truth in the past were even thrown out by judges because they were only designed to come up with the result that groups like Truth wanted. Also, Truth over the years keeps changing their numbers around and its not adding up. What does this 1200 a day mean? That would mean 438000 a year. This is way above the number listed in any government data.
Truth in their attempt to ridicule and destroy all tobacco companies by generalizing all their claims to all cigarette companies and by exaggerating numbers that come from false predictions and not records has become just as manipulative and deceitful as the tobacco companies they hate so much.
