Smoking related illness kills more people than auto accidents, homicides, AIDS, drugs and fires. If this happened with any other product, do you think it would be banned?
More than auto-accidents, drugs and AIDS, eh? Really? That’s eerie.
Anyone else see this being next weeks question?
Hmm…maybe. It depends on the product I guess. Big tobacco is making a lot of old white men rich, so as long as that continues I don’t see an end to smoking cigs. :-/
i do. i think to a degree it should be banned, but i don’t see an end to it either.
no.
Depends on how profitable the product is and who it is making the money, really.
Jeez.
No.
probably
Most definitely, but, the people running the tobacco companies are from the same rich, white families that have been upholding it’s operations since the beginning of the 20th century. They hold so much power and influence in society that they can basically do what they want. You see the pharmaceutical companies getting sued everyday over mere side effects.
And now a stand-up bit by Chris Rock really made me think: If Blacks were the first to sell cigarettes, do you think they would of been made illegal as soon as the risks were observed and their makers thrown in prison for endangering the public’s health?
thats craaazy, but interesting.
yes. too bad all the people in charge of banning are all addicted….
Absolutely should be banned. It sickens me that people are so greedy to make money by keeping people addicted to deadly substances.
It doesn’t stop here though, check out Kevin Trudeau’s book “Natural Cures THEY Don’t Want You To Know About” to find out how the pharmaceutical industry is more interested in keeping people sick. Why? That’s how they make money. The pharmaceutical industry should be banned as well. They add chemicals to prescription drugs, just like the tobacco companies add chemicals to cigarettes. They’re just as bad, and I’d love to see someone take them on too.
Now, some knot-head is going to come along and ask why shouldn’t alcohol be treated in the same way? That one’s easy. Because when used responsibly, alcohol has health benefits. There is no way to use tobacco responsibly. That’s the difference.
fsfafafafdsfds
My question: If smoking was banned, wouldn’t people just do it anyway?
Take Marijuana for example. I probably know as many people who smoke pot than I do that smoke cigarettes, maybe more.
I do not condone either, but I had to ask.
Would banning it make a difference?
ok to clear things out first… does anybody else realize that these truth ads are paid for by the Phillip morris company… (Philip Morris USA brands include Marlboro, Virginia Slims, Merit, Parliament, Alpine, Basic, Cambridge, Bristol, Bucks, Chesterfield, Collector’s Choice, Commander, English Ovals, Lark, L&M, Benson & Hedges, Players and Saratoga.) taken from wikipedia but it is still reliable. I feel like these truth advertisements are not doing a very good job anymore. There used to be commercials that actually had some meaning to them such as this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJTCWtcAews&feature=related or this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4xmFcrJexk&feature=related. Now they use sarcasm with cartoons and musical numbers. I dont see how you can take the horrible effects of smoking seriously when they joke around like are. I mean at least it’s an anti-smoking commercial but it’s not actually that truthful. They put one fact in the commercial and joke around about the seriousness of it. I think you guys need to step your game up but i doubt that you will if you’re still owned by the people that you’re fighting against.
@lynnygblair - Ha, you conspiracy twits amuse the hell out of me.
As for Truth, look, if this were 20 years ago, you guys would probably mean something. As it stands, people are aware of the dangers of smoking. It’s their choice to continue to do so and it’s not your right to take away that choice. You complain about the Tobacco Lobby making a profit, well I think that’s the whole point of capitalism. Supply a product people want and they’ll pay you for it. Then the doctors take care of those who get sick and that keeps them in jobs. It all works out very nicely in the end. Oh and I have a grandfather who died of lung cancer. Shit happens. Just shut the hell up already because your ads are retarded and your questions have been asked and answered already.
@Schristian - Be careful what you say, you might just be a victim of the pharmaceutical industry one day too!
People don’t have a “right” to smoke, people have a “privilege” to smoke, and that’s not necessarily a good thing. Nowhere in the Constitution is the right to smoke protected. Smokers are the most useless fucking people. They think everyone else wants to enjoy their shit. The American Lung Association clean air act is a step in the right direction. They want to ban smoking in bars and restaurants? Good! I don’t want to breathe toxic secondhand smoke. Dr. Kavorkian (sp?) got thrown in the clink for helping people kill themselves. Why not big tobacco? After all, that’s exactly what they’re doing to!
what about alcohol? there are definite problems with alcohol abuse and teenagers. why not attack them?
you know, rumor on the street is that you guys are paid by the tobacco corporation.
You know, Bakersfield’s air is contaminated not by cigarette smoke, but by all the byproducts of the Central Valley. The government wants us to clean up our air, but even if Bakersfield shut down, we’d still have 60% of the bad air left ’cause the crap draws like a chimney down the valley. NOW WHY AREN’T YOU SHUTTING DOWN SAN FRANCISCO SO I CAN BREATHE?
Oh, yeah. Our health isn’t important, just your agenda.
the number #1 killer in america is heart disease. how about ya’ll go out and spread some truth about high cholesterol foods instead?
No, because the product is not medicinal or likewise purposeful–smoking is cultural. That is why Fen-fen is off of the market, while cigarettes are not. “Truth” is probably among the same ilk that ban merry-go-rounds and even sand from playgrounds too. Have you not yet caught on that your target audience hates you?
how do i take back my eprops?! lmao
You fail to mention how many obesity deaths there are. You know, from Burger King related diseases…..but then you wouldn’t, because you do their ads. You hypocritical tossers.
P.S. Kindly FUCK THE FUCKING HELL OFF WITH THE LAME BACK-HANDERS TO XANGA.COM TO FORCIBLY GET YOUR INFANTILE FEATURED ‘QUESTIONS’ UP THERE. Featured questions are banal, yes, which is everything you stand for, but PLEASE, leave it alone for people who actually WANT to know an answer to something. Not your fucking limp rhetorical soundbites.
I have to admit, I’m getting kind of tired of you guys. Smoking is my right, and though I don’t have any intrest to, it is still my right. People know the dangers of smoking, but they decide to do it anyways, so why not let them die in peace?
Alcohol related deaths per year only number around 50,000. About a tenth of tobacco. Also, alcohol used responsibly has health benefits, such has an increase in good cholesterol levels, a decreased risk of blood clots, strokes, and heart disease, as well as aiding in digestion.

@lynnygblair - couldn’t have said it better myself ^_^
well number #1 its gross and #2 it’s ssssooooo bad for you and other people around
you it can give you heart attack stroke i dont think any one wants that at ALL period #3 it bad for your thoughts and un healthy BAD VERY BAD VERY VERY VERY BAD.
Not if it made the government money. =]
How about wars? Does it kill more people than wars? How about the ravages in Third World countries? Does it kill more people than those?
What a banal site, but it’s like a train wreck. You just gotta look because that is the base nature of human nature. It’s getting so a person can’t walk down the street and enjoy a pleasant evening walk without offending somebody.
When did so-called adults become such whining two year olds? When is it going to stop? After tobacco, sugar, alcohol, etc, etc, etc have all been abolished, then what? Old people and other “non perfects” in the gas chamber because they are a burden on somebody?
Nope.. seriously just let the people who want to smoke, smoke in peace. I dont judge you because you are addicted to Coffee, or when you go back for that 4th piece of Cake…seriously…
I’m sick of people assuming that all smokers are rude asses who blow secondhand smoke in non-smokers faces.
I smoke, but not around children or non-smoking friends or family. I’d never be that rude. If someone is smoking in an inappropriate place, the problem is their rudeness not their smoking.
