  • Tobacco companies actually went to court so they could continue to advertise near high schools. Why would they do that?

  • Hmmm couldnt think of a GOOD reason why they would do that! (Said in sarcasm!)

These people seem to have zero feelings or ethics!!!!

  • Gotta get ‘em while they’re young. LOL.

  • ‘Cause they love admitting their target market.

  • that is so stupid they are doing that b/c they know people who turn 18 are prolly in hs so that means there is always kids who want to try smoking which is so not cool so they show pics of famous ppl smoking to encourage teens i think that it totally barbaric

  • Smoking is disgusting!

  • Tobacco companies don’t care; they just want to make a fast buck.  Very sad and sick really.

  • what was the name of the case?

  • Check us out!  We did a “No Sale Day” on Kauai, Hawaii. It was great our no sale signs covered tobacco ads in the stores that participated.

  • @DejaGyrl - That’s great you did a “no sale” day. I applaud you for doing this, and hope you have more planned in the future.

As for truth, the answer is easy. Big Tobacco has always looked to target the younger generation, calling them “replacement smokers.” Don’t believe me? Look it up, it’s there! They know darn well that their product kills, but they make it anyway, so they have to have someone to replace everyone that dies.
    Have to maintain the equilibrium.

  • because once the high school people start smoking, they don’t stop.

    bad habits die hard.

  • well, this could very well be, 1: they have the right to, and; 2: they have the big bucks to actually stand up to the infringement on their rights… I wish it didn’t take big bucks to effectively stand up for your rights.

    P.S. I don’t support Big Tobacco.

  • That’s disgusting. Maybe they have a death wish, since they’re making me homicidal..!

  • Because smoking is cool, and teenagers need to realize it.

Not to mention, high school seniors (and some juniors) can legally buy cigarettes.   There’s nothing unethical, illegal, or problematic with them advertising.

I don’t think that Truth is a necessary function of government.  Your bureaucratic agency should be cut as soon as the next budget gets passed around the House floor.  Seriously.  You people need to get jobs in the private sector, and quit wasting our tax dollars.

  • Hmm let me think on this one.  It’s SO hard to figure out.

Maybe because students need a good smoke to mellow out after all their pot.

  • Smoking harms. I can’t see a difference between tobacco and narcotics -other than the way they are taken. Advertisments for cigarettes, regardless of their location, sholudn’t be allowed. Their act to legitimize the promotion of their harmful products just highlights failure of the existing legal system to provide a comprehensive protection to the public.

It seems that sales figure means a lot more that morals for Tobacco companies. Will they insist if one of their children is attending high school?

    To CountrySideRonin:
DO THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO HARM PEOPLE? There is sufficient evidence about how badly smoking harms us. What is the difference between deliberately selling harmful products, for example cigarettes, and murdering? Even the right for smoking should be doubt – second hand smoking makes others suffer physically, and psycologically as well. I agree with you that freedom should be treasured, but I think freedom should not be granted on some ocassions, especially when public interest is endangered.

    To barrowben
The Law isn’t enough. Whether an action is right depends on a lot more factor than law. There are a lot of immoral things that you can do will out breaking the law. Moreover, the legal system isn’t perfect.

  • Are you guy’s seriously trying to ban free speech? What makes the tobacco companies any different than you idiots who are allowed to advertise IN the schools? Is what you have to say somehow protected with the first amendment more than what they have to say?

Freedom of speech is a right, not a privilege dictated to us by those who are offended by what some people have to say.

Your self righteousness will never cease to piss me off.

  • its the younger generation…. thier future fulltime potiential smokers

  • heh. talking about rights…

does the government have the “right” to bomb a place? sure..b/c they said so…

    you want comparisons?
Doctors kill more people on average compared to guns….Doctors should be banned too.

  • Because the last time I checked, we live in America where companies are allowed to practice free enterprise. Tobacco companies aren’t shoving cigarettes down peoples’ throats. It is common knowledge that smoking is unhealthy, and everyone who starts does so with full knowledge of what they’re doing. The way you guys shove propaganda down our throats denies one of the most fundamental elements of humanity– free will.

  • teenagers are their bread and butter, its what actually realllyy really really keeps their empire rolling, the oldies whove been hooked, are just drone zombies for them now.

Better see the movie  “Thank You For Smoking.”

  • Because America is a capitalist society and all that runs this country is money.

  • the earlier they start smoking, the longer they will smoke.
