What about personal responsibility? what happens when we take a person’s decision to smoke or not smoke away, instead telling them what the right thing to do is? what happens when personal government and individual responsibility are no longer a factor b/c right and wrong is dictated to us by the government and lobbyists? big tobacco has no monopoly on people’s decisions, it’s a personal decision to use tobacco. I’ve had two people very close to me die b/c of it and I am trying to get my best fried to stop using chewing tobacco. i have a boyfriend who smokes…i try and try to get him to quit but theres just no convincing him. he knows about how much money he wastes and all the risks, he even ended up in the hospital due to a lung related issuse(the dr.’s never really knew what was causing his pain but he almost died and im so sure that its due to his smoking). how can i help him? he’s made attempts to quit but never sticks with them longer then a day…what do i do now?

i think the organization truth is one of the best things that could happen to kids my age. i hear them on the bus saying how smoking is lame, and all i can think is “sweet”. smoking is the single most disgusting habit that’s legal. i have a friend who smokes and it just breaks my heart to be near her and smell the smoke on her clothes and not be able to stop her. and to the person up there complaining about fat people i think both issues should be fixed. unneccesary obesity is an epidemic, but food is what you need to survive. and nothing’s pretty about overeating, but there’s NOTHING good from tobacco. anyways, i love this organization and keep doing what you’re doing

I think this is a great way to get the message across. Smoking is a horrible addiction because of how selfish it is. I mean it’s not bad enough that you have to destroy your health but then killing off your friends and family along with it is unthinkable.

The fact that these people produce ads against smoking does not in any way limit your freedom. If you have a right to smoke – they have a right to not smoke. If you have a right to express a point, so do they. Freedom of expression applies to all sides, people. Get over it.

There are a few things I’d like to clear up with this comment.
First of all, nice vid.
Second of all, get it through your head. Yes, it’s not illegal to smoke, and I’m not saying that the government should immediately ban smoking throughout the US, most of the revenue comes from tobacco taxes anyway so if they did that the whole economy would probably collapse.
But I’m sick of all this “you can’t force people not to smoke” bullshit. Yes, that is true, you can’t force people not to smoke, it IS their decision, but then again it is some upstanding citizen’s decision to post these vids in the first place to inform us all of the dangers of smoking. I mean seriously, if us morons have a right to smoke then I think the people who post these vids have a right to make a public statement.
And don’t go harping on about how “It’s their decision if they want to destroy their lives”. I mean, sure. We all know what smoking does by now and I think we all know that lighting one up can seriously damage your lungs, mouth, and other things I feel too nauseated to talk about at the moment, if some people still decide to smoke besides the risks involved, then I agree, it’s their free choice.
But it’s not a free choice for those innocent non-smokers who still have to live with the smokers. Secondhand smoke DOES kill. Even more so than firsthand smoke. These people may have the right to smoke of their own free will but the people around them deserve the right to not inhale their smoke, and until someone invents portable air filters I’m sorry to say that smoking doesn’t just kill you, it kills others. So it’s fine if you want to take a few pills or jump off a bridge, that’s your own free will, but smoking is totally unforgivable. If you want to commit suicide, do it without hurting others in the process.
And if these public service announcements irritate you and make you want to smoke, then just stop watching the fucking videos. Don’t ruin it for everyone else. Giving people a chance to choose right from wrong is the moral fiber upon which this country was founded. In our government, one is altogether encouraged to build a strong moral sense of right and wrong. I’m actually not a big government kind of gal. I think government is too powerful already, and that we need major reforms.
Where your arguement disintegrates, however, is where you say that you should be solely responsible for making decisions about right and wrong. Murder, rape, violence; those are all choices people make. They made the choice to do the WRONG thing, and our government has to address that. Otherwise, our world would be complete chaos.
Smoking is no different. Smoking is destructive, and it kills. I’m not saying that government should make smoking illegal, (though I live in Ohio and we just passed a public smoking ban) but I am saying that people aren’t smart enough to make that decision on their own. I’m a member of STAND, and I will stand by the effort to eliminate cigarettes from our world. Smoking kills. You could be next.

When I was 14 my school forced me to sit through an assembly called “Smoke Busters” where four middle-aged idiots dressed up in t-shirts, donned backwards baseball caps and proceeded to rap about the dangers of smoking.

first off, there are at least a dozen other chemicals found in cigarettes that are far more destructive to the body/lifestyle than sodium hydroxide (such as benzopyrene and nitrosamine which are directly carcinogenic), second, to me this ad implies: “hairyness=health; therefore dont smoke (or use anything that contains sodium hydroxide–like certain types of soap, soft-drinks,etc.) or you’ll lose your hair(health)!”… not exactly the right message for the purpose of this ad

Yeah, thats extremely diluted sodium hydroxide (NaOH), right? I work with that stuff daily, and I know that taking it and putting it on someone’s back wouldnt just remove hair, but skin too. Caustic chemicals dont play nice with people.

I think they’re making a good effort, but wasting their money. I smoke but a lot of other people have a hard time quitting. Just because there’s a chemical in it doesn’t mean it’ll instantly kill you. As for the children on here thinking it’s disgusting, I have something else to say. Isn’t fast food gross?! All that highly processed fake stuff? Clogging all your arteries, building the calories up…all that cholesterol? Carbohydrates? Yummy! I almost think having a hole in my throat would be better than having a heart attack or heart transplant. Or what about that ‘clean’ air we’re breathing in right as I type, all the same, if not worse toxins and gasses. I agree with the people in here who say we should make TRUTH commercials about other things as well. Smoking isn’t as bad as being a drug addict or an alchoholic, or anorexia, or being homeless, ect. Funny how I don’t see many of those commercials on TV. Don’t mean to bash at all. I’m just saying, there are far worse things in the world right now than someone lighting up a cigarette. Let’s concentrate on other things as well.
Actually, smoking is disgusting and you can really taste the cigarettes after you get done smoking a huge ass blunt or fat joint. Cause after smoking organic pure cannabis, you can taste the difference. But….gotta love sweet nicotine for increasing the high. I smoke a pack a day, a cigarette after every bowl and joint i smoke.
