Garbage Cans
Watch as New Yorkers get infected with the knowledge that Big Tobacco’s products kill 36,000 people a month. That’s more lives being thrown away than there are public garbage cans in New York City.

You know, every time I see this site, I end up going out and buying another pack of smokes.
You’re enforcing my belief that by smoking I’m defying authority!
I’m a rebel! A rebel I say!
wow amazing
it’s really terrible , but it warns everyone ! great
Powerful, but creepy. I’m glad that you did that in NY instead of my town, because if I saw body parts in a trash can, I’d freak out!
OMG ewww……
OMG ewww……
A bit overdramatic, don’t you think?
Let’s see, we have 36,000 people dead each month. That’s 432,000 per year, yet according to the statistics, there are roughly 75 million smokers in the United States. Assuming that those all the dead smokers live in the United States, that still means that you have less than a 1% chance of dying from smoking.
New York City needs to get more public garbage cans, though. Seriously.
*lived, not live. Sheesh. I swear my I.Q. goes down each time I respond to something on here.
How do you apply the “freedom of choice” argument to smoking? Are you going to get on all the other bandwagons of things that–voluntarily or involuntarily–kill people? What about the non-smoking rights of unborn children? Anti-smoking movements are not in fact “truth” but only a miniscule portion of it. Real truth truly sets people free. Keep searching!
Garbage cans.. rock. Interesting way to send a message.
Christy
I am a nonsmoker. What made you a anti-tobacco crusader?
Just curious.
Christy
i dont see why people kep saying this sites pointless.
at least youre trying.
LOL thts funny 2 watch their reactions
i wanted to write a message in back hair!
I’m glad I don’t smoke.
I was waiting for those body parts to just suddenly move and startle bypassers… Maybe I’m sick that way.
Okay… no maybe. >.<
From what I’ve heard of New York city, maybe they should put in more garbage cans. if if the 36,000 dying a month are from New York, well, you should all smoke more, because this is too stupid to be linked to from the main Xanga page.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but personally, if I saw body parts sticking out of a trash can, I would be a little too freaked to complain about the annoyingness of this campaign.
And Drakonskyr, please don’t be a rebel. Rebels get taken by the men in white coats to the happy place.

‘In the year 2007 A.D, there was a race of people that paid money to light their own insides on fire, and they actually enjoyed it.’
I should probably use that as a tagline, even though I know full well that people are going to hate me for it.
Creepy… but a good idea.
And come one, people who comment everytime this site updates about how dumb it is, get a life and don’t come here if you don’t care about what’s being said. You’re not being forced to look at it.
Wow. I jsut started smoking a couple months ago…. bad choice. I think I’ll stop now, like seriously.
hi truth its me shelly i think your site is a very very cool site love to all shelly.
ew..
omg way to dramatic.. some ppl do smoke and yeeh alot of ppl do die ..dont you think they no what smokes do to them !!!! DUHHHH…
I just wanted to say the entire “Truth” Campaign, is incredible, and I’m proud someone is finally saying something. I’m sure your site, commercials, and various other campaigns have helped many teenagers say no to the pressures of smoking.
Thank You Once Again,

eh.. i would scream if i saw a random foot sticking out of a trash can. not just stare at it. thats so gross. but i guess its a hard fact we need to face. my brother used to smoke but i threatened to tell my parents so he stopped. its so gay how people think it makes them cool if they smoke, it just makes people who live above those influences think their retards. Its mostly peer pressure though, i guess..

Wow. I sure hope those weren’t real body parts, although they look pretty real from here.
Too bad you can’t do a campaign for second-hand smoking too. That kind of a situation, dying from second-hand smoking, is worse than dying from smoking the damned things yourself.
And to everyone else = YOU wouldn’t be saying that NYC needs more trash cans if you’re the ones that clean them out. And if you’re still so convinced, then go put more trashcans around your own place and chill.
Ever since I was little I asked my dad to stop smoking.
& He’s still smoking.
It’s only a matter of time when I’ll find out that he has lung cancer or emphysema.
‘In the year 2007 A.D, there was a race of people that paid money to light their own insides on fire, and they actually enjoyed it.’
^^ LOL I love that.
“Wow. I jsut started smoking a couple months ago…. bad choice. I think I’ll stop now, like seriously.”

^^ Yes, good choice.
Listen folks..Whether or not you like TheTruth it doesn’t matter. Whether or not your wildly innacurate statistics makes you think you have only less than 1% chance of dying from smoking (sic).. Whatever… This site might as well be called blahblah.org The fact is they are trying to educate the uneducated. People will smoke, yes. But if TheTruth can convince less than 1% of that group to quit smoking a year..what a great thing. If they could get a small portion of people who are thinking about picking up the addiction to not, what an even greater thing. Don’t put money in these peoples’ pockets. Put it in yours. Save up and pay cash for a nicer car
Oh, and 36,000 is indeed a lot of people every month who die from smoking. Allow me to put it into perspective.. That’s an entire small town every month… Every night you lay your head down on your pillow to go to bed, roughly 1000 people have died because of smoking..You can’t even fathom 1,000 people. That’s mass genocide. Imagine a football stadium packed with people. Now imagine about half of them dead. Woah right? These numbers may seem small and in the perspective of about 6,525,170,264 people, they are. But they are preventable deaths! Okay, enough from my soapbox. Have a good day guys
This site is pretty interesting. I don’t smoke, so I personally find all of these warnings humorous, and whenever people insist that they go out and smoke some more, I pity them.
You’ve seen the facts, smart things. If you want to die, I won’t be stopping you.
Wow. I sure hope those weren’t real body parts, although they look pretty real from here.
I sorta hope that they were real body parts, preferably those of anti-tobacco crusaders. Does this make me a bad person?

36,000 per month is a lot of people. I never said that it wasn’t; I said that compared to the number of smokers out there, it’s not a lot of people.
No death can actually be considered “preventable.” Too soon, maybe, but everyone is going to die eventually.
Smokers choose to smoke just as drivers choose to drive. Both groups are putting themselves at a risk with their actions. Indeed, we put ourselves at risk every day. Should we just stop living life on our own terms because those miniscule risks have a possibility of affecting us somehow?
You are safer when you take a drag of a cigarette than when you get behind the wheel, statistically speaking.
My dad and his girlfriend are both smokers. in fact my whole family is. If i don’t die from taking up smoking myself then i will almost surely die from second hand smoke.
I don’t see how the tobaco companie’s can deny that it is addictive, i don’t smoke it but i know it’s addictive. I am usually around my family everyday, and i have a litle addiction to the smell of the smoke and the chemicals. So i can’t imagine what it would be like to actually smoke them.

P.S. LOLZIES
Omega, not wanting to smoke doesn’t make you a two-faced snob. If she has friends who smoke, that’s her problem, not yours. Great job on taking a perfectly normal comment and turning it into a whole load of crap.
Wow…Good way to spread the message. I personally don’t care if people smoke or not, if they are old enough to purchase a pack of cigarettes, I think that they are old enough to know what kinds of chemicals and what they are doing to their body. Of course, by reading your past comment that people have given you, I understand that you aren’t completly trying to get people to quit, but to actually let them know the real facts of cigarettes. Actually, a month ago, I had to give a tobacco presentation to some fourth graders for my health class. Your facts actaully helped with putting my poster for the presentation actually helped.
Keep up with the good work!

Isn’t the whole point of Xanga to have a blog where you can express your thoughts, ideas, or whatever random BS that occurs to you throughout the day??
Some of you seem to have you panties in a wad over the opinions of TRUTH and the way they are expressed. How different is this then, might I ask, then the way you (BadnarikChick) expresses dislike over TheTheologiansCafe, or the (particularly ignorant in my opinion) attack of the fact a twenty year old is proud of being a single mother?
The only reason for posting negative opinions on a site like this, is wanting to draw attention to yourself and starting drama. Get over it. Seriously.
Oh…holy crap….O.O
I hope I NEVER smoke!!
What is truth?
This is pretty morbid.
g
What a horribly sick video. Why on earth would you do that in New York City, a place where they’re still finding body parts after 9-11? Can’t you people just give it a rest? In an attempt to get a point across, this campaign is not only rude and inconsiderate, but downright cruel.
I have never supported you and will never support you. You have seriously crossed the line one too many times.
Something tells me that CSI isn’t going to like that…..
o_o. that was so disturbing..
SMOKERS SUCK. BIG TOBACCO ARE DEATHMONGERS, JUST LIKE GEORGE W. BUSH and DICK CHENEY
IMPEACH BUSH!
Very nice.

Sometimes people just gotta die, even if they do it to themselves.
How’s it feel to accomplish nothing? I know what it’s like, but I thrive on that. You actually have a goal, and you’re crashing.
Whenever I read something on here, I feel dumber for having read it.

Napkin, you gotta understand: Anything I say on here, I only say that stuff for the lulz I enjoy once I get replies to them. Seems this page can keep the lulz coming non-stop, so that means I’ve found the ultimate source of chuckaliciousness on teh hole interwebz. Thanks for the congratulatory comment, too!
Soon, EVERY ONE WILL WANT TO KICK THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF YOU COCKSUCKERS.
Got brain cancer yet from your beloved COKE ZERO ???? I hear it’s “not a diet cola”. But hey, wouldn’t want to be TOO caught up in your own bullshit version of “truth” would ya.
More pretentitious LIES here http://www.cpbgroup.com/
Ick, body parts sticking out of a garbage can is gross. But, I’m glad someone is spreading the message..
I know a lot of people that smoke and I’m only 13. It’s never anyone in my house, it’s just that I hang around the skater type and that’s what they do…a lot of them are under 21 and they just think it’s ‘cool.’ It’s not though. My friends and I are always just like, “Go ahead and ruin your life.” I think after a certain point there isn’t a whole lot you can do. My best friend Adam (who’ll just love being called out on this) actually ran up to a 16 yr. old the other day and was like, “What the f**** are you doing?” And he sat down with the dude and they were talking and they talked for a while and as far as I know the guy hasn’t smoked since. Anyways, your site is great but I think you should advertise a lot more. I only ever see your commercials online and on The-N. I mean, you should put them on popular radio stations and whatever. Just a thought!!
l8r,
Kristyn *
Wow, Omega, I never realized what a great sense of humor you have. Maybe that’s why you’re one of the few people who hasn’t committed suicide yet in this crackhole of a society.
Fight fire with fire, I guess. If the world hands you lemons, squeeze them in someone’s eyes and toss them away.
I’d much rather die a smoker than live as a non-smoker.
I’m going to die anyway, it doesn’t matter what I die from.
Every time I see your attempt at an ad campaign it makes me want to START smoking.
Okay okay, we all get it, you lost out on the big contract for Marlboro so now you’re attempting some kind of revenge. So it makes you feel all better. Don’t cry, other cancer-causing ad-campaign contract will come along….just look at your Volkswagen deal – there’s a fuckload of carsonogens pumping out of those vehicles on a daily basis – affecting everyone who walks down the street !! See ! Life isn’t all that bad !! There there……
New York City needs to get more public garbage cans, though. Seriously.
What about some public toilets? Just imagine a city with as many public toilets as people who died from lung cancer in the US every year. Man, that would really make my day. Heck, I would even settle for as many public toilets as soldiers killed in Iraq. No more having to run back to my apartment full of smoking roommates when all I need to do is pee so I can get back to breathing the fresh city air.
That reminds me of PETA’s Unhappy Meal campaign. It was almost as distasteful.
What about some public toilets?
Well, first we have to know how many smelly homeless people will take shelter in those toilets during the night.
Then there are the different neighborhoods…
How about one of those port-a-potties (spelling?) that you pay 25 cents to use, but is self-cleaning?
They tried that, but the city said no.
Perhaps I am wrong, but I believe that almost everyone is aware that smoking causes cancer and that cancer, in turn, causes death. Spending large amounts of money to make people aware of something they already know seems like a waste of money.
Also, if you have studied the social psychological literature on persuasion and attitude change, then you know that if you create too much fear in people they simply ignore your message. Ignoring the message is an easier way to reduce the fear and dissonance than changing behavior–especially when that behavior is highly physically addictive. Additionally, the literature shows that fear is only effective in changing behavior if the fear inducing stimuli is immediately followed by very specific instructions on how to avoid whatever it is that is causing the fear (death in this case). Of course, you could say that people know that stopping smoking is the way to avoid cancer and death, but they already know this and it hasn’t helped. In fact, many of them have probably tried to stop smoking and failed. The way to make your message effective at changing behavior is to give very specific and novel (not the same old things people have heard that haven’t helped them) instructions to help people quit smoking immediately following the fear inducing part of the message. The advertisements I have seen in this campaign arouse a lot of fear, but say nothing of how to reduce it, which means they are unlikely to be effective.
Maybe instead of spending money to tell people something they already know, it should be spent on something more effective. The fact is people know that smoking causes cancer and is unhealthy but do it anyway. So why do they do it? There are probably many reasons–it’s an empirical question, one that I would guess is already much researched. It seems that the thing to do would be to find the answer to this question and then spend the money fighting the reasons people smoke despite its negative consequence.
I’m so glad you all have a xanga. Keep infecting the TRUTH.
this is creepy

y’know if you smoke for 20 years, thats 20% chance of death… when talking percentages, thats a really big chance. and most people who smoke, don’t stop, and they probably started back when they were a retard white trash teen. besides the deaths, people never mention how much of a crappy life you have by smoking, my older brother smokes, and he is skinny, bone skinny among all of his brothers (all 7 of them) who actually have filled out muscles. he sleeps all day, and talks B.S. whenever he’s around. he never has a job and sleeps in the broken down van in the back ally because all of his friends won’t let him sleep in their own house (even though those people probably have a crappy life too). before he started he was energetic, played sports, played guitar, was an amazing artist etc…. now his life is reduced to nothing, I can hardly call that a life to begin with. he’s 25 and he’s going nowhere.
(you sound a lot like you only think you’re smart, read a lot of smart books and then tell people you’re smart, rather annoying that is… you sound like you may actually be smart by nature, but you’re being ignorant. by the way “overdramatic” isn’t a compound word.)

good post Mr. Truth.
OMGX0RZZ, TRUTH TROLLIGN!
Your brother’s a piece of trash because he chose to be, and saying smoking cigarettes has anything to do with it (including his weight; if you notice, there are a lot of both obese and muscular smokers, i.e. mechanics) is like saying biting your nails will lead to certain failure in life. You can’t judge someone’s actions in life by a habit. Don King smokes, and he’s boxing’s biggest promoter. Plenty of pro baseball players smoke AND chew. Denis Leary smokes. Yet these are all examples of successful people.
The point is, you have no point. Don’t blame the tobacco industry for your brother failing at life, blame your brother. He’s old enough to know better.
new york city is not as big as the world, and they don’t necessarily have an adequate number of garbage cans.
how superadical.
I even used me and my wife’s word…
I agree with SakuraSong , second-hand smoke is worse, because you pay the price for someone
else’s mistake.
actually u have a lot more than 1% chance of dying from smoking b/c smoking can irritate or cause asthma and breathing difficulties but it ususally takes effect as mouth, tongue, throat, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, bladder, kidney, and ESP. LUNG CANCER which is the primary cause of cancer deaths in the u.s. so even though the people who smoke havent gotten cancer yet they unfortunately probaly will so u might not die instantly its true, but it takes years off ur life depending on how much and how often u smoke and more than 90% of lung cancers are caused by smoking but y would u pay 2 pump smoke and other chemicals into ur body in the first place to cause cancer, wrinkles, yellow teeth, its also a nasty habit AND give other people secondhand smoke which is just as bad them smoking themselves.

Within 48 hours after quitting smoking, blood pressure decreases, pulse rate drops, body temperature of hands and feet increases, the carbon monoxide level in the blood returns to normal, the oxygen level in the blood increases to normal, the chance of a heart attack decreases, nerve endings start regrowing, and the ability to taste and smell is increased.

Within the first year after quitting smoking circulation and lung function increase, and coughing, sinus congestion and shortness of breath decrease.
Everytime I smell the scent of secondhand smoke, I realize that I am inhaling the sweet sweet smell of freedom.
I smoke because I like it.
ya..I support your idea–
anti-manipulation.
are they real human body parts and how’d u get hold of them!?!?!?
effective but it doesn’t make me want to give up my marlboro’s
i love your site. more power and God bless always!
thanks for making this site.,. it made my anti-smokingness stronger!

WOW WOW WOW!!!
At this point in my life, I really dont care of the effects of me smoking. It keeps my mood in check, and thats what I want it to do.
I mean, honestly, every teenager that starts smoking knows the risks and accepts them. If not, they wouldn’t be smoking. Its right there on the pack that they open “Surgen Generals Warning.” Its not like they say “Oh a pack of cigarettes, there’s no warning, so lets light up 4 of them at the same time!!!” They don’t. There is a warning on every single pack in the world. So they cant say that they didnt know from the beginning.
I LOVE YOUR CAMPAIGN!
Hello, http://www.saviorleadme.com I smoked from the time I was 13 to 18 and then again when I was 22 to 27 years old. It was real hard to quit, real hard, but I keep at it. I crave for a cig. and then it would make me sick and when I got over being sick I craved again. But I stoped, I was as I said 27 now I am 67 and I seen alot of people I knew die from them cigs. If I had been smoking for the last 40 yeads I proberly won’t be here to tell you this. Cheyenne, or Brother David http://www.moneymaking.homestead.com http://www.marijuanabustnumberone.com
The Abortion industry Kills 3000 people a day, and those people killed have no choice in the matter, forget about Big Tobacco, the smokers are making a choice for themselves, Stand for those who never get the choice, the innocent baby who is sucked out of its mothers womb 3000 times a day in the USA alone,
Geez….if I saw that in a trashcan, I’d cry. Like, not even kidding.
