  • It’s what’s inside that counts

Soups, cereals and other products we consume have to list ingredients on their
labels, but cigarettes are not required to list any of the 599 possible
additives. If it were up to Big Tobacco, we’d never know about these ingredients.

    Serving size: 1 cigarette
    Servings per container: 20
    +daily value not established

    Ingredients

    • Ammonia
    •  Nicotine
    • Ammonium Hydroxide
    • Benzaldehyide
    • Bornyl
      Acetate
    • Cellulose
    • Diammonium Phosphate
    • Ethyl Phenylacetate
    • Hexanoic

  • Smoking is so disgusting!!!!!!

  • Ewww. It’s like death wrapped in paper. Bleck.
    Kelly ~/`~

  • Dang, I can never seem to get first on this stupid blog.

  • Ammonia: An ingredient found in household cleaners. It’s not safe to drink, so don’t ask.
Nicotine: A chemical naturally occurring in tobacco leaves that is highly addictive. It does very little of the actual ‘damage’ that cigarettes do, but it’s the nicotine that makes you want to puff more.
Ammonium Hydroxide: An ingredient also found in household cleaners. There was a small video about it taking the hair off people’s backs posted earlier; while that’s a bunch of hooey, it’s also not safe to drink. (Trust me on this.)

You can Google the rest of them if you want, but I don’t think most of them are fit for human consumption.

And by the way…if you can’t drink/eat it, lighting it on fire and inhaling the combusted remains isn’t an option either.

P.S. An item not on this list is tar. Yes, the same gooey black stuff that they pour on roads. Mmm, tar.

  • hey, you guys rock =]]]

  • ew. cellulose.

  • I wonder, though, if printing that would really make a dent on the number of smokers out there. Like someone else pointed out before, it’s not like smokers don’t already know that smoking is bad for them…

  • P.S.

I do, however, believe that education is always beneficial.

  • smokin s so bad & disgustin … Hate it !!!

  • I think it would be nice if you listed all of the possible additives.

  • possible additives? so are some of them not in there or could some of them be fabricated?

  • the process of a long smoke will rip holes in the lungs and irritate the lungs’ thing sheets between the aveoli and capularies. This is most important to note…and so forth.

  • I love coffee chocolate !

How about you – AD ?

    And do you smoke ?

  • The race car driver who drove the winston car died yesterday.

    Of lung cancer.

  • ..and yet you can still get away with ‘spinning’ to people that “Sweetener 951″ is just some innocent lickle sweetener, when infact it is Aspartame. So what does that make YOU. Have a little quote from my own truth seeing as how you like to make people aware of ingredients of cancer sticks - yet have a rather poor track record of pointing out what’s in your beloved Coke Zero :

    Carbonated water
    Colour (150d)akaSulphite Ammonia Caramel
Food acid 338akaPhosphoric Acid” (Also used for rust removal!)
Food acid 331akaSodium Citrates” (Also used in photography and as an anticoagulant of blood stored for transfusion!)
    Flavour
Sweetener 951akaAspartame” (According to the US FDA, “the [National Cancer Institute] currently is studying aspartame and other dietary factors as part of a larger study of adult brain cancer.” You might want to wait for the results before you drink it. Also, avoid this one if you’re moody!)
Sweetener 950akaAcesulfame Potassium” (Looking for reasons to avoid this sweetener? Look no further…)
Preservative 211akaSodium Benzoate” (Undiluted this stuff isn’t too bad… Just don’t let it touch your skin!)
    Caffeine

Ooh look – “Ammonia” !! That would be what you’re telling people not to intake then….except…you’re telling them to intake it on a product that IS on your advertising portfolio. Kindly make up your mind what you’re trying to tell people is “bad”. And that’s another $1000 you owe me, cheers.

  • you know, its hard to tell people to stop because you know that they are adicted to it. from what i know, smoking helps calm nerves and stress to those who smoke.(i dont dw)..personnaly it makes me uncomfortable when ppl smoke it because i know thers all this bad stuff in it.

but like what Truth_Lite said, its not just cigs that are bad for you. thers way more things out there worst. there are more ppl eating processed frozen food( which is mostly responsible for obesity and malnutrition) for dinner evryday, than ppl who smoke.

so, whos politically correct? no one is. keep an open mind about things. i know smoking is bad for you, but hey im not here to tell anyone what to do.

BTW, if you want to see a new view on smoking, watch “THANK YOU FOR SMOKING”~great movie which is related to this topic.

  • Truth_Lite – If you spent half as much time using your efforts to take part in a cause that you DO support, as you do researching and trying to prove Truth wrong – it would be much more productive, don’t you think? I mean it’s apparent that you’re fairly intelligent and are capable of getting your point across, so why don’t you put that to better use? Do you think your long, obnoxious posts are going to stop Truth? You’re wasting your time.

I’m just curious though, if Truth hired much smaller advertising companies that didn’t have clients such as Burger King and Coke, would you still hate them as much? I think that it’s an unfair argument to say that just because they have the same advertising company as Burger King they’re hypocrites – because you can’t expect Truth to take on the fight against obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc just because those things also kill you. There are other organizations for those problems! Truth chose to take part in teaching people the possible outcomes of smoking, but that doesn’t mean they are now all of a sudden responsible for every single thing that can potentially kill you and are expected to teach everyone about those things as well. That is just ridiculous!

I respect your right to say what you want, I just think your time and efforts should be spent on something that you support. Maybe you can actually make a difference and do something to help people with a problem that you are concerned about instead of sitting around online bashing Truth all day. I mean really, what is that accomplishing? You certainly haven’t changed my opinion.

  • So an ice storm has stopped me from antagonizing for some time, but now that it’s over and Mother Nature has once again had her ass handed to her by technology,

  • . . . hm. I’m too happy to say anything snarky. Weird.

  • wow…ew!  thanks for the info!  j.

  • I stand corrected.

Truth_Lite IS supporting a cause they believe in – which is, the fight against immorality in a corporately-brainwashed society. Rest assured, if the companies Truth advertised on the side were smaller, but the products had the same effects, those would be pointed out, too. And the way it should be? If you’re advertising things that kill people while bashing Big Tobacco for killing people, you shouldn’t take up a healthy cause in the first place. It only makes said company look like total dicks – especially when a chunk of their Truth funding came from Phillip Morris. Not familiar with PM? Google it. Seems they do a lot more harm than good.

Surprised they didn’t call their aspartame “zephyr.”

  • mmmm. tasty i love my cigarettes and i dont care what is in them. they taste good to me.

Well, I can’t speak for Truth_Lite on this one, but my personal reasons for leaving “long, obnoxious posts” are more along the lines of making Xanga’s little Jim Jones Kool-Aid drinking minions/teenagers question “information” that they’re being peddled by an organization like Truth. I’ve been fairly happy to see that I’m quite successful in making people think, as I’ve been told by certain others on my own site.

That is just ridiculous!

While I know that this question wasn’t directed at me, I’ve been asked this by others. My personal response would be yes and no. No, because they wouldn’t be quite as hypocritical by way of ignoring other ills. Yes, because Truth is still hypocritical in peddling misinformation while lambasting the tobacco companies for doing, *gasp* the VERY SAME THING. There are anti-smoking organizations that I respect; Truth isn’t one of them.

Bashing Truth is merely just a side benefit of this all (for me, anyways). I spend plenty of time doing other things; I’m a full-time student on an academic scholarship maintaining a 4.0 at one of the best journalism schools in the country. Again, I’m seeking to make a difference in the way that people think in general and in the way that people see mainstream media, not in how people think of cigarettes (although that would be an added bonus). I don’t care if I’ve changed any opinions, but I do hope that what I have to say on here has made other people think about how well-supported their own opinions are. If I come across as a little strong and more than a little nutty or abrasive, oh well.

TRUTH: Cellulose is actually GOOD for people. It’s called “dietary fiber” and “roughage” for a reason, you know. And nicotine is naturally occurring in all members of the nightshade family, such as tomatoes, but that doesn’t make me want to eat any more of them. What about storax? People inhale that all the time when they smell incense or perfume, so what could possibly be so bad about that?

  • you’re going to die anyways. might as well take home in the comforting flicker and smoke.

  • and why does it matter anyways… if you don’t smoke then thats a choice you made. good for you. congragulations. you made a choice.

where I live (calgary, AB) there is a smoking ban.. you can’t smoke outside or in ANY public areas. not even a pub. nowhere. death of smoking and drinking. why should the government be able to make that kind of decision.

  • Everything BadnarikChick said, basically. Why would I research and try and prove truth wrong ? If we were talking about a single-issue organisation here, perhaps, say, a charity, something, you know..LEGITIMATE, as opposed to an advertising agency, then perhaps I wouldn’t feel the need to remind people what hypocrites we’re dealing with. If you visit my “Mantra” post, you’ll see EXACTLY why I’m here. Kindly do this, instead of making lazy assumptions.

  • Oh god, CELLULOSE?!!!

I’M SMOKING THE PRIMARY STRUCTURAL COMPONANT OF GREEN PLANTS?!!!

    POIIIIISOOOOOOON!

  • But you know that the greatest part about that label is that they fail to note the primary ingredient in cigarettes.

Was tobacco just not scary-sounding enough to print?

  • Yummy.

  • Gross! Your profile is looking great, thanks for keeping us up-to-date with all of the lies Big T spreads, and there are a lot of them!

Check out this Slide Show I made to show my support and do my part to be a carrier:

  • smoking is disgusting and unhealthy!! i dont see how ppl would want to smell like that. i mean my grandma smokes and i hate it because when i come home from visiting her it takes a couple of washes to get the smell outta my hair. its just disgusting…

  • Hey, that Winston car driver (Booby Hamilton) died of head and neck cancer, not lung cancer.  I don’t know if you were trying to be funny, but at least get your facts right.  If you were trying to be funny, that’s just sick.

  • Sorry for the typo on the last entry.  Bobby Hamilton.

  • I LOVE SMOKING. I WANT TO DIE. YAYOYAY. SMOKING IS AWESOME. im 14 YRS OLD!

  • Anyone else here think that “storax” and “benzeldehyde” sound like pokemon? Or obscure Yiddish swear words?

  • Geez, I’m 14 too but I’m not as hairbrained as you are. Hopefully you’ll die before you get the chance to procreate.

With idiots like this running amok our society, it’s a wonder how human civilization is going to survive. Good thing I’ll probably be dead (likely from secondhand smoke, ironically) before I see countries blow each other up with nukes.

Personally, though, I’ll wholehandedly support other people’s rights to smoke if someone passed a law that all smokers be required to wear plastic bags over their heads while smoking.

  • Or paper bags with rubber bands around the neck, gotta protect the environment too you know =P

  • tar is delicious, motherfuckers.
secondly, as anti-smoking as i am,
this blog and every single one of
    your imbecilic comments make not
    one fucking shred of difference:
if people could be weaned off an
    addictive, lethal drug by sheer
force of words, there would exist
no coke or meth addicts. way to
    waste your breath, everyone.

  • everyone cancles each other out.

what one person gets wrong another gets right and visa versa.

    what does this prove?

    that no one is perfect.

    simple as that.

I’m sick of people putting dumb comments like “I LOVE SMOKE” “WOW! I’M SMOKING A PLANT!”, so I shall turn my rudder to Truth; ne’er to return.

If people aren’t smart enough to stop killing themselves we need to enlighten them sure, but I would geuss that 98% of America is overwieght. That kills too. 99.9% drive cars or trucks, putting junk into the air. That kills too. Nearly everyone in some way is running the world down.

Hey I’ve got an idea! Why don;t we get the government to bad all smokes? Oh yeah, the government gets a lot of money through that. Ruoghly 30% of beer drinkers in Texas are under age. What would happen if we through all of them in prison? The Government loses that much in taxes.

    Terrible catch 22 isn’t it?

    So long and happy arguing!

  • I LOVE SMOKING. I WANT TO DIE. YAYOYAY. SMOKING IS AWESOME. im 14 YRS OLD!

    Yeah, whaddaya want, a medal?

Geez, I’m 14 too but I’m not as hairbrained as you are. Hopefully you’ll die before you get the chance to procreate.

My sentiments about the abover person exactly, except probably for different reasons.

With idiots like this running amok our society, it’s a wonder how human civilization is going to survive. Good thing I’ll probably be dead (likely from secondhand smoke, ironically) before I see countries blow each other up with nukes.

You’re giving the idiots who comprise the majority of the human race too much credit by assuming that they’re going to be the death of the whole race. The intelligent few among us are the ones who’ll evolve to overcome the adversities that nature and the aforementioned idiots have forced upon us. Secondhand smoke will probably be a trivial problem when compared to something greater, like global warming or a giant meteor shower. Humans in and of themselves are too self-important to realize that there are greater forces than ours that control the way Earth works and whatnot.

Personally, though, I’ll wholehandedly support other people’s rights to smoke if someone passed a law that all smokers be required to wear plastic bags over their heads while smoking.

Again, my staunch Libertarian roots come into play when I say that I disagree with you. Smokers should have every right to, at the very least, smoke inside of their own homes and on their own property. The whole “plastic bags over their heads” thing is just a little bit too juvenile for me to refute here.

Just out of curiosity, how do organizations like Truth feel about marijuana smokers? We never hear about them allegedly dying from lung, mouth, or throat cancers associated with their “addiction.”

  • smoking is disgusting and unhealthy!! i dont see how ppl would want to smell like that.
    Posted 1/17/2007 8:40 PM by southern_beachy

I know I smoke merely to smell like tobacco.

Shit, I hate the fucking smell of cigarettes so much that it makes me gag sometimes, but that’s not what smoking is about.

  • *sigh* why argue smoking is better than cereals? It is plain fact that smoking is bad in general. Like I said before.

  • The Lorax hates Storax!

  • I Love what u guys are doing!!!

Is there anything i can do?

    Love ya

  • just a little comment on cellulose, suitable, cus im currently studying it at A Level Biology…

cellulose is a polysaccharide (sugar) which appears on the cell wall of plants (cellulose contains the main role of plant food intake). sounds like its healthy doesnt it. in fact, we humans eat it simply because our bodies dont have the enzymes to digest it, like the way amylase digests starch. we eat it because we cant digest it, and because it pushes down the bulk waste in your small intestines, so you can get rid of excrementary wastes, clearing your digestive system. mean to say that smoking actually clears your digestive system? or even… mean to say that smoking can replace the intake of plants??

im very anti-smoking. just that the point about cellulose being an ingredient is interesting!

  • hey…im a smoker…on the verge of quitting…but it would be great if I actually knew what all these chemicals were…what else are they used in?

    Jessiray

  • I hate smoking.

  • Telling my father to quit smoking after 45 years?  HA!  It’s something he enjoys.  And he’s got lungs of a 20 year old.  Doctors can’t explain it, but it’s family heredity.  His mother and sister are the same way.

Suing the tobacco industry for getting cancer is like suing McDonalds for getting fat.  “Wah, well I knew it was bad for me, but I didn’t want to make the effort to stop.”

Has anyone looked at SMOKERS RIGHTS here?  I don’t smoke personally, but I respect a person’s right to smoke.  Leave them alone for God’s sake.  No I don’t believe that a child under 18 should smoke, but once they pass that mile stone, it’s their choice, just like it’s their choice to go fight in a war, which can ALSO KILL THEM.  Or after 21 when they can DRINK.

Why is NO ONE attacking ALCOHOL?!  One of the worst things out there?!  If you “TRUTH” people put as much effort into getting rid of ciggaretts as much as booze, this country would be a whole lot safer!  My God, look at all the broken families, drunken drivers, battered women, the list goes on and on.

Try going after something that really hurts, like that.

Or even the crisis in Darfur.

There are more noble causes than bothering someone who just stepped out for a smoke.

    Damn..

  • God I love cigarettes.

  • Mmm sure cigarettes are good. Good for anyone looking forward to getting lung cancer and emphysema.

I can’t even stand people who smoke because most of them don’t even know shit of what they are doing to themselves.

This is just my opinion, don’t spazz out on me kay?

    Good.

  • we all know smoking is bad, but why argue about it if truth is trying to help us try and fix that? it’s not only smokers that are harmed by the cigarettes, its the people who take in the second hand smoke. they get cancer too.

  • Roll up your own tobacco and you’ll live longer and still be able to shhhmoke!

  • I’m going to quit smoking right away! Thanks guys!

  • I’ve smoked for many years. I wish I didn’t. It was a learned behavior from both my parents who died of lung cancer. Yeah, I wish I was as strong as you all. Yeah, I feel weak and stupid. Seeing what you post hurts. I’ve tried to stop smoking many times. I feel hopeless. I feel even more hopeless when I read this kind of stuff. It doesn’t help me. It might make you non-smokers better, but it doesn’t make me feel any better. And it doesn’t make me feel like I can quit. It makes me feel even more hopeless. Like I’m wrong and bad. Thanks.

  • a cigarette contains paper, filter and tobacco. all of the so-called “ingredients” you list are by-products of the smoking of it…
it’s too easy to pick on you guys, you’re all flaky behind those blinders.

  • Gosh, I wish my friends could get this into their heads!

    Disgusting, but so true! =(

    </3

  • In response to the comment from  TheVandalizedNapkin, I’ll say this: Tar is so bad they don’t even put it into asphalt pavement anymore…

  • im jus puttin this one there. in in my mid-teens, so im using that as the relativ e. my generation has actually begun smoking less (and i dont just mean cigs). my parents’ generation (and the gen in between mine and theirs) actually is smokin about 3 times as much my gen does. whether it sthe infect trust ads, spread of knowledge, whatever, its working.

  • Whoever doesn’t know this already is quite stupid.
