If you have ever eaten fast food, you don’t have much to say about tobacco. How many people die of weight/adipose related problems? Why don’t we start a little campaign about that? People slowly kill themselves every day. It is all common knowledge, and people continue to do it. Maybe it isn’t about ignorance. Maybe we should convince people that life is too good to waste on poison (not just tobacco) instead of shoving facts (that we have all heard before) in their faces. I like the whole “Truth” idea, but this approach to it is asinine and it irritates me.

Who is going to change their mind about smoking because someone stuck home-printed stickers on a mall map and then removed them immediately after their friends saw it? Why don’t we just chat with our friends about not smoking?
Oh wait.. because that’s a FANTASTIC way to keep friends — everyone likes their personal tastes insulted.
Just.. really. This would annoy people into smoking. I’m anti-smoking myself, but this makes me want to pick up a couple packs.
i don’t get that..
Haven’t people seen enough of your annoying “advertising.”
“Shit, where is big and tall? It should be here where this retarded sticker is.”
That just seems really annoying, honestly.
lol =D
Annoying.
Ah, I didn’t get it at first. But then I looked at the picture. If it bothers you to see this so much, just peel the sticker off.
That sticker is annoying?!?! WTF? Which is more annoying: Seeing some sticker in a mall where more than half of the people know where every store is anyway, or having to breathe second – hand smoke from some a**hole that has not regard for other people? Think about that.
meg21686
ain’t that the truth. i’ like the fact that people express their ideas. but there’s a limit i agree with that meg chick
Thanks rockor_chick
Peeling a sticker off is one thing. Scraping all the white gunky residue left over is another, and is best left to a janitor . . . who probably smokes.
I totaly agree with ListslessAreTheOutcasts its true, you make a choice EVERYDAY to choose weither to smoke or not and instead of just foucusing on smoking there are far more important issues going down. If someone is smoking next too you then move its that simple, and stop shoving truth commertcails down peoples throats because ITS NOT EASY TO QUIT I know people who have gone crazy trying to quit, its like PETA everyone makes a choice weather if its to smoke or to shoot junk in your veins they both kill ya anyway.
By advocating and supplying the materials necessary for the vandalism of public property, you are committing a felony under U.S. Criminal Code.
jjasp– i don’t get it either.
Dang, I haven’t commented on this site in a while…
Anyway, here’s my useless proverbial two cents for the day:
An advertising company is starting a campaign against another advertising company for its ‘pervasiveness’.
Hypocrisy defined, no?
That aside, when they start handing out death sentences for spreading tobacco facts on mall signs, this campaign will be useless, but I found it rather amusing.
And Omegabite, if you peel it off carefully, there won’t be any sticky gunk left over.
stefan warner
Depends on how long it’s left on/how much the thing’s pressed onto the surface by slap-happy kids trying to find a cheap thrill. All things aside, it is vandalism – as much so as graffiti. Is graffiti vandalism? Yes. And can it be removed? Yes. So it’s pretty much the same thing.
“Hey kids, stop smoking and get thrown in juvy instead! Just act cute with the guard and he’ll cut you loose! Nevermind the guy with the tattoos walking out with the frightened little girl, and all those shoppers ready to kick your ass for screwing with the map, you’re doing the right thing!” Isn’t this campaign’s purpose to promote GOOD health, rather than dead kids and black eyes? Wouldn’t it be a better idea to put the stickers on something people don’t read, like the blank areas of glass on convenience store doors? That’s where they’re sold, and if people are reminded of what’s going on moments before they buy a pack, they might not. Geeze, if you’re gonna condone a criminal act, at least do it with a bit of common sense.
This is stupid. I am quitting smoking and I feel like everytime I see one of these stupid adds or one of the commericials I just want to light one up. Now.. I agree with the person who said hey people dont smoke, go vandalize the mall directory. This is assanine. Hey how about “truth” stops trying to shove things down people’s throats. You think the tobacco companies are bad because they “coax” people into smoking, look at some of truth’s stuff. Now thats trying to Coax..
Yo, fuck me. Fuck me sideways.
i disagree with ListslessAreTheOutcasts i mean, i know people get obese and die from it for being so gluttonous and whatnot, but is there such thing as secondhand obesity? well atually, i heard about it, but we dont sniff up the smell of fat people and get fat ourselves, do we? smoking not just kills the person who smokes, it kills the others around them. and i dont know about you, but i dont want to die because some careless jerk decided to smoke near me.
I hope I can meet the people behind ‘Truth’ one day, so i can put my cigarettes out in their eyes.
Ok, I personally have never smoked, so I don’t know how addicting it can be. However, I know people who, with the right motivation, have quit cold turkey and did not go ‘crazy.’ And yes, there are a lot of other things besides smoking that can kill you. It is crazy to except TRUTH to tackle every single thing. That would take a lot of time. So, they decided to focus on one thing, and see if they could make a difference with that. However, one of the biggest difference with smoking is that you not only affect yourself, but people around you. If you eat fast food, no one around you can be poisoned by the smell. Granted, those of us who don’t like the smoke can move, but what about in restaurants. If you are in there with your family, maybe a baby or little kids, and people are smoking on the other side of the place, that smoke travels, and comes over to your side, your kids breathe that in, and they are affected by it. Should you get up and leave the restaurant just because someone wants to smoke? What gives the smoker more of a right to be there than you?
The town that I live in has a no smoking ordianance for all the restaurants, and I personally love it. I used to hate going into some of them, because the bar was sort of in the middle, and you could smoke there, and it drifted over. I hated being able to smell that while I was eating. It’s a much more enjoyable experience now. I also think that it’s healthier for the wait staff, now that they don’t have to go over to that side and be immersed in that poison. And that thing about “well, if they don’t like it, why don’t they get another job?,” is not the best response. I know what it’s like to need a job, and sometimes, you have to work the job that you get. Not everyone always has an option.
The whole strategy is really kinda pointless, the stickers piss off the people who dont smoke and the people who it’s aimed at dont care.
ps. it is vandalism.
That is not vandalism. it’s just pretty stickers going onto a map that i personally never look at anyway. I do not agree with ListslessAreTheOutcasts because shoving food in your face does not effect anyone else unless you do die. Shoving food into your body can easily be remedied by exercising some during your day – which you should already do anyway – and smoking is not so easy, it can not be fixed, only stopped by quitting.
Vandalism is fun. (I should know, look at my name for god’s sakes -_-;)
If you’re going to vandalize a sign, at least you’re spreading knowledge doing it. As opposed to shoplifting a carton of cigarettes.
And besides…If the stickers weren’t actually obscuring the map, would you even look at them anyway? Kind of like how you don’t look at a pop-up unless it’s covering the page you’re visiting.
Putting stickers on signs may be illegal, but apparently the ignorant public can’t be reached using only legal methods. (Parallelism to Big Tobacco here, unfortunately.)
“Spreading knowledge”….why aren’t we a good little sap there – well done for being deluded into believing Crispin Porter and Bogusky genuinely give a flying fuck if you live or die. How much genuine concern CAN we expect from a bunch of cretins who when it suits them tell you “hey kids those tobacco companies they’re poisoning you they are” then when you’re nicely diverted enough tell you to drink Miller Lite until you kill someone drink-driving. But I digress : “spreading knowledge” is at best extremely tentative. “Knowledge” should never be confused with “basic common sense that even as yet undiscovered Amazon tribes already knew”. Still, they have a contract to fulfill. And please don’t be fooled into thinking otherwise – that’s ALL they’re doing.
i know this is all for a good cause and everything..but things are starting to get ridiculous
Meg21686, here’s a fresh cup of coffee; time to wake up and realize there’s no smoking in nearly 90% of all American restaurants. Otherwise there’s a smoking/non-smoking section, so quit rabbiting on about a case that doesn’t exist. Worried about kids inhaling the smoke? Keep them the hell out of the smoking area – if you don’t, you fail as a parent and have no right to complain. Worried about that poor waiting staff who has to serve those nasty, second-class citizen smokers? Don’t; they’re not so stupid that they didn’t know there would be smokers when they applied for the job. They’re grown people and they know better. Their fault, not the smokers’. How do I know? I used to be a waiter at a place with a smoking section. And if you go to a restaurant, chances are you’ll see a rectangular bulge in a server’s pocket and an assload of other servers smoking on break. The majority of them do.
Napkin, you’d be hard-pressed to steal a carton of cigarettes when they sit behind the counter on a shelf, with a clerk standing in front of you. And maybe one day, when tax money comes out of your check, you’ll be a little pissed off about it when some jerk kid vandalizes public property. You know, stuff that everyone (including you) is paying for? We’ve got signs for a reason. No, the public isn’t ignorant; they know the facts, and they know about Truth. The fact is, Truth is bullcrap; and the problem is, the public doesn’t give a damn. If that’s how it is, meh – that’s their problem. Go on with life. How will smokers dying effect your life? It doesn’t. Those statistics will never take a dime out of your check. Think anyone’s going to care if you die from lung cancer caused by asbestos or radon inhalation? If you’re thinking outside your immediate family, don’t.
And edwardo_tardio? Yeah. It is vandalism. And just because you, as an individual, don’t read the signs, doesn’t mean that counts for the rest of the population. Oh, and after someone quits smoking, lungs begin to develop new tissue, so . . . wrong again.
Big Tobacco . . . as opposed to Little Tobacco, or Somewhere-In-Between Tobacco? I guess the cheap stuff is okay with you guys?
For guys who call themselves Truth, they sure do lie, break the law, and hide things from the public a lot. Ironic, amirite? Only in America.
They are not stickers anyway. They would probably be taped on by someone. You’d have to buy sticker paper to make them sticky, duh.
Anyway, I am heavily against smoking and I HATE walking past people that do smoke (I always cough at them ;P ) but yes, this would annoy even me. Interesting info, not the right method.
“They are not stickers anyway. They would probably be taped on by someone. You’d have to buy sticker paper to make them sticky, duh.”
Which is the point, retard. Start bitching when you see someone smoking in a mall.
being grown doesnt necessarily mean you know better. grown people smoke while knowing that it can cause cancer and other deadly diseases and that you can die from it. of course they know better.
Even if it’s force-fed and uncaring knowledge, Truth_Lite, it’s knowledge all the same. I know perfectly well that advertising agencies don’t very well give a shit for what happens to their customers as long as they buy the product, but WHAT THE HELL. If an advertising company ran an ad that says “1 + 1 = 2 so go buy our product, blah blah blah”, next thing you know there’ll be hordes of people who’ve bought the product but at least feel assured knowing that should the need ever arise, they’ll be able to recite what 1 + 1 equals without much trouble. Inadvertently educating the masses while selling product; that’s the hypocritical game that all ad companies play. I just suck it up and learn to live with it; then of course, there are people like you that don’t. (Not that I’m criticizing you for that, I would gladly strap a few blocks of C4 on my back and run into the offices of CPB too.)
Omega, as usual, you successfully debate the point, but why should I give a damn if some delinquent decides to spray obscenities or put orange asterisk stickers on a sign? I can easily live with the fact that it’s coming out of my paycheck because the little dipshit who committed the crime in the first place is probably a hobo with nothing better to do who’ll die of herpes. Not to mention that the sign probably isn’t stating anything of importance in the first place and the higher powers in charge of it likely won’t bother. Yes, I have a strange mind.
By the way, that little bit about stealing the cigarettes was sarcasm, but I really think people are overreacting about the stickers equating with vandalism. Technically, it IS considered vandalism, but I think our society would have a hard time explaining to others just why exactly putting harmless orange stickers on signs makes you a felon.
Another example of political correctness gone awry.
Props to ExtremeTableDancer for spamming an advert agency’s blog. Way to give those dolts a taste of their own proverbial medicine.
About the TableDancer person, highly agreed.
The fact that replacement and expenses comes out of your wallet should piss you off. If there were no taxes, you’d get a check for $412 for a two-week pay period instead of the usual $330 or so. That’s a lot of dough going to Uncle Sam to make society a better place. But, you know, it’s really up to a parent to decide what their kids can get away with. It’s coming out of their wallets, too.
And whether or not you give a damn is irrelevant. I’m no Republican, but you can bet most folks who work and have a good idea of how the system works would be a little bugged if someone ruined something the government was taking a fourth of their pay away for.
I like how this makes it seem like product placement is new. Go watch a movie and count brand names. Watch Ghostbusters and count the Coke cans. Product placement’s old hat. For crying out loud, phone companies are paying celebrities to just be seen using their phones once, to make them seem cool. There are people whose entire job is to walk around with a camera or drive a car or whatever so that people see the brand as they’re walking about.
It’s not like tobacco companies are allowed to do commercials like vodka (and I’d wager the people who are run over because somebody else had a few cigarettes earlier are a bit less numerous than victims of drunk driving), or set up machines with their logo on it in schools, like fatty snack foods (commence obesity statistics) or sugar-filled colas stuffed with the quite-addictive drug caffeine (linked to plenty of health problems by itself).
Hell, go ahead and name how many main characters in TV and movies you can think of who smoke. Then name the villains who smoke. If that’s not a bit of cultural conditioning, I don’t know what is.
Don’t be sheep.
I smoke and I do understand how terrible it is. I think what you are doing is great, but you have to understand a lot of people won’t be scared out of smoking. You guys should try making progams or have tips for quitting. Or mabye you already have that and i haven’t done my homework.
I think what these people are doing is great. I’m sick of people smoking and being rude as to the others around them. If you’re going to screw up your own life, fine, but do it in your own time. I don’t want smoke blown in my face all the time. My father smokes, all-the-time, and it’s horrible. I hate walking into somewhere and just being drowned by cigarette smoke. I’d take these and stick them places, but I don’t have much time to. And funny thing is, a lot of people complain “Oh, this is gay, this is stupid” but I guarntee you if more posts under here where positive towards this, less people would be all “Gay, stupid.” e_e going with the flow of what the majority says. Btw. Sometimes, the only way to get someone to understand something is by being blunt. As is with smoking. You can’t go around sugarcoating what happens when you smoke anymore. People do it so much, without knowing or really caring of the affects on themselves, and those around.
i totally agree.
but i think Truth is wasting their time and money…people know damn well what theyre getting themselves into.
as long as people can afford cigarettes (and now theyre as expensive as a cup of coffee from Starbucks) theyre going to say “i’ll quit next week” and then it comes and goes. and they say what we all say about things (like homework) that arent very “pleasant” experiences…ive known a couple people who have quit, for their wifes, husbands, and kids. and no matter how horrible they felt when they quit cold turkey, theyre going to be thankful with the time they have added to their lives to spend with those people who matter the most.
this life is already so short…i really dont understand why people knowingly make it shorter. its like not buckling your seat belt…how many seconds does that take? one…but it only takes one to die. people say “it wont happen to me, it wont happen to me” well guess what honey, youre no more superhuman than anybody else. save your life, and maybe even your kid or your spouses wife and put the damn cigarette out. appreciate life a little more, you only have one…and how can you make a difference in this world when you have to take a smoke-break every hour? so what if you feel horrible for a few days or weeks, we all have to do things we dont want to do sometimes to accomplish something. so just man-up or woman-up and just fuckin quit.
God I love cigarettes
i like this idea
a lot.
to the person who said something about eating fast food, why don’t you go start a campaign for that? These people who started the truth ads had that same idea, and they started it, but i bet if this campaign was about fast food kiling you, you would be against that. fucking hipocrites.
what.. is it?
interesting that the campaign is “Truth” – but the “facts” on these stickers are unverifiable and vague.
Big Tobacco=buzzword to get a bunch of bored teens and twentysomethings to spread your social agenda. I don’t know why it is that anything BIG is inheritly evil. Why is it always our David versus their Goliath? The Rebel Alliance versus the Gallactic Empire? The rabble only wins in the movies. The Decemberists, the Chinese republican army…all little guys who got crushed. You know what you are to Phillip Morris? Little more than an annoyance. You can change NOTHING.
lollerskates.
everyone above me thinks too much of everything. ranting and arguing through comments isn’t going to change anything. atleast the “truth” person is trying to save lives. arguing over felonies isn’t going to save anybody.
I LOVE SMOKING!!!!
although it tastes funny when you kiss a smoker, but then you go brush your teeth.
:]
I hate you.
this site is just to inform people about smoking. they arent saying “Hey all you gaytards, do this or smoke” this is just suggesting funny ways to keep people from smoking. here’s a thought: if you think its defacing public property, DONT DO IT!! i mean make ur own choises…smoke if ya want, put a freakin homemade sticker on a unused map if ya want. I mean seriously. most people know where every freakin store in the mall is, unless your at like the mall of america or the galleria or something, but even then you have an idea of where atleast some stores are. im just saying, dont even come to the site if you’re just gonna leave rude comments.
-madi
Man, you guys are so edgy putting stickers on a mall directory.
I don’t get it….what are/is pantaloons?
dude. people are talking about vandalism.
there are about 243364534 little directories in the mall, and people to help.
shut up, there just making a point.
this is so stupid.
a site against smoking is telling us to vandalize!?WTF DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH SMOKING!?the truth site is so hypocritical!your trying to get people to do what you think is the right thing, and tell them to illlegaly vandalize.thats incredibly stupid.
if people want to smoke they should be able to effing smoke.second hand smoke isnt going to kill you.im not a smoker, but i believe smokers have the same rights as us, and its stupid to treat them like shit.you are no better than someone who smokes.
So, you’re telling people go vandalize malls? Wonderful. Next, you’ll be telling people to kill smokers.
>.< Oh god, I shouldn’t give you fools any ideas.
uhm..? the point of truth is to infect the truth, get the knowledge around. this is a very clever way to spread knowledge, considering how many people are going to see it but be too lazy to peel it off. truth isn’t about getting people to stop, but rather to let people make their own decision about smoking without being manipulated by companies that don’t give the whole truth. if this is annoying to you, don’t do it O.o. if you want to fight the manipulation of big smoking companies, then infect truth any way you can.

Start bitching when you see someone smoking in a mall.
being grown doesnt necessarily mean you know better.
grown people smoke while knowing that it can cause cancer and other deadly diseases
and that you can die from it.
of course they know better.
And funny thing is, a lot of people complain “Oh, this is gay, this is stupid” but I guarntee you if more posts under here where positive towards this, less people would be all “Gay, stupid.”
e_e going with the flow of what the majority says.
