Lung cancer can arise under any circumstance and at any age, smoking or not, and a 30 year old who gets lung cancer who may smoke, was, in all likelihood, predisposed to the disease in the first place by genetics, ill luck or grew up too close to the Interstate (clinically speaking, interstate and airfield traffic is equivalent to smoking 10 Marlboros per day). Lots of dogs get the side effect of lung disease from living in homes too close to freeways and airports.
But to play by your analogy, I would think that a woman who happened to smoke and dies at say 65 of lung cancer and who happens to be a mother, her children would be in their 30′s and 40′s. So, the question of adopting the children appears to be moot. Again, by your analogy, since it takes a few decades to keel over, possibly, but not always, from having been a smoker, the children should already be dead by 30 or 40 from the effects of second hand smoke.
Smoking is a wretched habit, yes, but don’t play with bogus arguments that keep the ignorant in their ignorance. Informed truthfully is always best.
