Personally, I don’t want someone smoking near or in my face because I’m not looking forward to hearing I have lung cancer 30 years from now. Just as non-smokers should respect a smoker’s right to smoke, a smoker must respect a non-smoker’s right to not have to deal with it. Truth might lower the amount of smokers but reality is, it isn’t going to stop so everyone should just give each other respect about it. But whoever can try to lower the amount of public places smokers can smoke, I say go for it. Im more for living rather than getting a disease and dying because of something that was created for profit. I didn’t know a slow, depressed death was a norm here.

Wowwwwww- all i gotta say, is obviously SOMETHING’S working, ’cause all of these people, (plus those who didn’t comment after some of these people’s nasty ones), are reading the entries AND commenting. The roach advertising- would definately work around here, I’m not gonna lie. So maybe it doesn’t work where everyone else is from, but making a difference around one place at a time will eventually spread around, thus- it’s contagious, as is truth. DERRRR!

Second-hand smoke is just as bad a smoking a cigarette. If you want to poison your body, that’s fine, but I choose not to. When you’re sitting next to me in a restaurant poisoning my body, you begin to invade my rights and that’s the reason so many people are against smoking. I don’t care if you want a higher risk of lung cancer, but I do not. I eat well, exercise, avoid alcohol, and don’t smoke. I don’t want to develope lung cancer because of the selfish jackasses around me. My permission should be required for you to smoke anywhere near me.

To be honest, I’m not agreeing with this whole truth thing. I don’t smoke cigarettes, but last time I saw her, she was smoking cigarettes. I’m sure that people who smoke know the consequences and have seen many Truth commercials. Information is everywhere. When it comes to cigarettes, I say to let it be their own decision. Truth may influence some smokers to quit, but I doubt most. Besides, there are bigger problems in the world than just people smoking cigarettes.

before you all get uptight and are like “Oh no! she hates smokers!” a lot of people in my family smoke and I don’t hold it against them.
All I am saying is that the reasons that there are laws, yes laws go look it up, saying you have to stay 15 feet away from a building when you smoke is because people are getting lung cancer from second hand smoke. Now you are all going to yell at me about the sue-happy people who get cancer from second hand smoke. well, if the people who smoke have a right to smoke, don’t the people who refrain from smoking have a right to no suffer the sideaffects of smoking? I think they do. If someone was going arround and infecting people with typhoid by cooking for someone, but they themselves didn’t ever get typhoid, wouldn’t you want them not to cook for you? the story of Typhoid Mary was a tragic one. I’m not going to get into the politics of it, but there seems to be a corralation between this and the smoking thing.
bottom line: second hand smoke causes cancer in people who have never smoked. (hence the second hand part) this is not fair to them, or to their family members. So think about that before you light one up around non-smokers.

This xanga isn’t really going to do much. It’ll make non-smokers more opposed to smoking and will just make smokers shrug and continue smoking. It’s not going to make anyone stop smoking, I can guarantee you that. The people who smoke (and are going to smoke) will do so. The people who will not smoke won’t. I hope you realize that.
The whole “smoking is bad for you” thing is common knowledge. You probably couldn’t find a single person on the street who would tell you that smoking is good for you or that it has no negative effects. Yeah, it causes horrible diseases. Smokers realize this. As a smoker, I do as well. I accept that fact, and if I get lung cancer I will fully admit it being of my own doing.
It is an unhealthy addiction. Everyone has them. Yes, even you reading this. Overeating, cutting, sexual addictions, eating disorders, being on the computer or in front of the TV 24 / 7, shopaholics, alcoholism. All unhealthy habits / addictions. All either leading to premature deaths, financial problems, or severe health concerns.
The thing is…heart attacks kill FAR more people than smoking. Yet you don’t see any “TRUTH” about obesity or overeating. Because that’s not PC. Yeah, I smoke. Yeah, I’m knocking years off of my life by doing so and giving in to my addiction. But so is someone who is stuffing their face and not exercising and is 40 lbs overweight. We’ll both die at the same age, maybe in our 50s or so. Myself most likely from cancer, the other person most likely from heart failure.
That is what I find strange about the truth campaigne. That, and the sentiments expressed on this site are pretty much common knowledge.

well, this is how i see it… sure, smoking is bad. both my parents smoke and i’m constantly around it. i tell them to stop, but they obviously don’t care. cigarette companies are now putting those warnings on the packages in hopes of convincing people to not smoke. before i used to think, “why would the government allow something to be sold that kills over 50,000 americans year?” and then it dawned on me… because they can. they have the right to. i think some people might disagree with me on this, but that’s okay.
so here’s the thing: there are warnings on packages. there are commercials on TV saying how bad smoking is. there are also advertisements for health clinics or whatever that can help you in cutting an addiction. what more can people ask for? the police can’t come to your house and demand that you stop smoking. so, if people want to destroy their body, let them. there’s nothing we can do about it because we’ve already put warnings and “the truth.” if people can’t see their mistake, then oh well. some people smoke and they know it’s bad. if they know it’s so bad, then how come they’re not doing something to fix it? why don’t they start by not buying the damn things? or talking to their doctors? you should see my mom… she’ll be sitting on the couch and she’ll go, “i know i need to cut this habbit because it’s bad. i know.” and then she’ll light up a cigarette right after she says it. and i know that my mom isn’t the only person who does that.
if people aren’t convinced enough, then oh well. let them smoke. we’ve done all we could. they know the dangers, and yet they’re not doing anything about it.

at my high school there was a “stealth marketing program” during which we got all the students hyped about our “OMG” campaign. Then at the end we revealed that the “OMG” moment was that 2/3 of our students AREN’T drinking. The same thing happened there that is happening here. Some people took it really well, and we felt like we really hit home. But then, some others called us “f**king liars” and “fascists” and “Wave followers”, like in that really creepy novel “The Wave”. But some of those people couldn’t even spell Fascist. I mean, you can’t convert them all, but you have to try. And I personally think that tobacco is one of the things we must protect ourselves from most.

A.) Lead to many health problems. (i.e. Lung Cancer, Mouth Cancer, Throat Cancer… etc.)
B.) Take atleast a couple years from your life-span… blah blah blah
C.) Make people who kiss you want to vomit continuously in thier mouths.
D.) Make it to when you smile and your beautiful yellow,brown, greenish, raunchy teeth make an appearence.. will, well… also make people want to vomit continuously in thier mouths, and lets not forget the lovely smell that will roll out off your tongue like a thick fog in the early morning.
But lets’ face it people, people DO have the right to smoke, and if they feel that they must why not let them. They HAVE the right to set themselves available to the many health risks that are associated with tobacco; so let them.
And for the people who don’t smoke, we are as much of risk as they are, considering all 2nd hand smoke that will always be around. For anyone who wasn’t aware of it, 2nd hand smoke is infact just as bad as smoking itself.

If you think about it, the United States is supported by four beams of power: Oil, banks, retail, and tobacco. Some may disagree, and they probably spend too much time looking at charts, but the fact of the matter is people are 5 times less likely to quit smoking over things they already know about tobacco than they are to quit eating at McDonald’s after discovering things they don’t; not to mention as long as there are companies like Phillip Morris lining the pockets of politicians, tobacco will continue to be a huge economic staple of this country.
I understand that a few people may actually stop smoking after seeing these commercials, and that’s great for them – but what happens when they die? Smokers, collectively, are like a Hydra; when one head gets cut off, two more replace it. Such is the way of this declining society. Not to mention it’s sort of like how people claim Christians shove their beliefs down peoples’ throats, only you guys actually are. What someone does in the comfort of their own home, by their own independent choice, is theirs to make. Trying to persuade them to do otherwise is not only harassment, but it’s also hurting your own economy. Please don’t be Communists. Leave smokers alone and focus on more important issues, like illegal substances.

I disagree with the people who are mad at you. Yes, people have the right to smoke. But on the same note, you have the right to show the facts and whatnot. You might not change everyone’s mind, but I support your campaign. I don’t believe you are forcing a change, so much as attempting to inspire a change. And, it is a change for the better, so I do not understand why there is so many negative oppinions. People have the CHOICE to believe you and act upon that belief, or not.

Surreal_love_Profound_Hate, I partly I agree with you. But you’re also wrong. The people that are shoveling food into their mouths are doing it to themselves. They control how much they eat {whether they have an eating disorder or not they’re still doing it}, but they can’t control someone else smoking. If you’re going to smoke, it shouldn’t be in a closed room where it can get to everyone. And it’s not just lung cancer that they can get. Other than smelling bad, a lot of diseases come from smoking. My grandma died from pancreatic cancer. Besides that, smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants don’t work very well. The non-smoking sections still have smoke and smell like smoke, just not near as much in comparison to the smoking section. And if someone won’t stop smoking for a well-paying job that they like, that’s their problem. And if someone has to walk 10 feet just to get outside so they don’t endanger the lives of other people, good. I have never seen someone smoking become an “outcast to society” because of a Truth Ad. “Hey! You smoke! I heard that was bad on TV! I can’t talk to you anymore, sorry.” There’s a difference between being an outcast and having to move 10 feet so you can smoke outside.
And yes, the Truth Ads sometimes go a little far, but never to Nazi status {do you even know what the Nazis did?} And unless the people that work for Truth smoke, they aren’t hypocrites. {Oh, and by the way, this isn’t all directed at Surreal_love_Profound_Hate.} And like incisions said, Truth is aimed at smoking and tobacco, not every danger on Earth. They picked a topic and they stuck with it. That’s not being ignorant. And this comment is way long, so I’m gonna stop it from getting longer.

Some of you are missing the point–this blog and the commercials are specifically targeting smoking, not everything that has the potential to kill us. You can’t critique them on that if that’s not what they were trying to do.
For those of you who think it’s ridiculous to mandate that smokers stay a certain distance away from buildings–hey, I don’t care if you want to kill yourself, but I don’t want to get lung cancer because of some idiot. If I wanted to kill myself, I’ll find my own way, thanks. We have laws about drinking and murder, so I think we should have laws on smoking too.

I like what TRUTH is doing. It reminds me (in a way) of the efforts put forth by PETA, due to both the scare tactics and openly public advertising methods.
Anyone wishing to argue against TRUTH or PETA should know that it is the peoples’ right to protest, and nobody can take that away no matter how hard they try. So a blind eye (and perhaps ear) or two may need to be turned on these groups from time to time if one is against them. But remember, the facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored.
Trying to save a life (whether human or animal) is always a worthy cause. And if it takes something shocking to open up someone’s eyes and see the light then may they continue on by all means.

Here’s the point people aren’t getting. Yea people die from smoking, yea it’s their choice. But it’s knda a choice they shouldn’t have. Comparing it to prescription drugs, if any drug had the type of side effects that it has, it would be immediately banned. Truth is just increasing awareness, nothing more. You can choose not to listen.
But the fact of the matter is that it affects other people. So many people die from second hand smoke. Something that is not their choice. So, I think people have the right to not smoke.
